tell me if you relate...
Photography wasn't always about fancy equipment and chasing awards. It began, like most passions, with a spark of curiosity and a whole lot of "making it work" with what I had. Now in the spirit of transparency, I’m going to be 100% honest with you, I only started photography because I knew it would make more girls like me (I was going into my freshman year of high school, chill on me 😂)
The camera felt hefty in my hands, a clunky black brick compared to the sleek phones everyone else seemed to carry. It wasn't fancy, this starter DSLR, but it held the promise of a world seen differently. Back then, excitement battled with frustration in a way I almost miss now. Remember that?
The thrill of capturing that perfect sunrise, only to be met with a blurry mess on the screen? Or the countless sunsets that ended up looking like orange blobs on a grey canvas? I feel you.
Let me tell you a secret: those blurry sunrises and washed-out sunsets were stepping stones.
Every underexposed alleyway photo and grainy close-up of your pet was a lesson learned.
Remember spending hours hunched over your computer, squinting at tutorials, desperately trying to understand aperture and shutter speed? It felt like deciphering an ancient language, right?
There were days, sure, when you wanted to chuck I camera at the wall. When even the simplest shot seemed to mock your efforts. But then, there it was – that one photo.
Maybe it was a dewdrop clinging to a spiderweb, a child's laughter etched on their face, or the way the city lights blurred into a river of color at night.
That single, perfect image, born from your lens, was a validation worth more than any award. It whispered, "You're getting there. Keep going."
Although it was great that I was getting better, I wanted to start making money off my craft so I could reinvest it back into myself. I wanted to be able to buy a better camera, better lenses, better equipment.
But the problem was that I was simply wasn't making enough, if any at all, through photography to be able to do any of that.
Have you found yourself in a similar situation ?
You need more money but you don't want to spend too much time away from your main thing: Photography
That's when I discovered the answer
I had to start trading my skills for money.
I had to update my identity:
I am not a 9-5 worker.
I am an entrepreneur.
I am a photographer.
I spent the next 2 months learning about a new kind of business pursue: A photography business
As my skills grew, I knew could start using this skill to make money.
I started asking seniors in my high school to take their senior portraits. At first, a LOT of people said no.
"Who wants to be the guinea pig for the beginner photographer?" They probably thought.
However, I was persistent and I landed my first paid client.
The experience not only gave me a confidence boost but also introduced me to the concept of using my photography as a service.
It seemed too good to be true, like it was an absolute 10/10 product I could sell.
That's where you create a few packages (just like making gifts) and bundle them together to help your clients with a particular pain they have. You sell that package to clients who really want their photos taken, and see the value in working with you.
And so I started the process of creating and selling my photography packages, which has made over $10,000 alone in the 2 years. Seriously... That number shocks me.
And I was making $7.50 an hour working at Dairy Queen before this LOL
With the money and success that came from starting my photography business, my life changed so drastically...
I was able to afford whatever I wanted, I could buy stuff for my parents, and eat out whenever I wanted too.
This was when I devised my framework for being able to make and sell great photos.
It was all about prioritizing your creativity first.
Aperture, shutter speed, ISO.
Yeah, trust me, those are all still important.
But a camera doesn't take pictures on its own.
It needs a great master.
There’s going to be times where an idea you had in your head doesn’t turn out how you thought it would but that’s okay!
That’s exactly how you grow.
The money wasn't bad either
I had finally got what I wanted
A successful photography business where I was finally able to start making my own money on my own terms
Building a business I was proud of made me so much more confident and I started taking some pictures that actually got me way more clients!
Out of nowhere I started getting more and more clients into me, and people actually began to respect me, and my work.
I remember hearing people saying I was the best photographer in the school, and it felt so good hearing that.
At my peak I was doing minimum of 5-6 paid shoots a week. All while still in high school.
I got to experience photography in a way that most people will never know, and I think my early days was the gateway to this.
But best of all - I just feel so gotdamn good about myself. I look at my portfolio everyday and see what I've built through years of trial and error.
I think it's so important for a you with a camera in your hands. Getting clients is awesome, but when you actually LIKE yourself and the pictures
that you take and think you're GOOD ENOUGH, that's when you really become happy.
How to start your photography business without it getting complicated
Maybe you're thinking that it'd be easier to just continue as you are...
Waiting for your 9-5 to pay you a liveable wage…...
Perhaps considering getting a job to make money to invest into your content...
Those are the thoughts I was getting too. "It's gonna be such a long process learning how to start a photography business"
But then I realized that if I didn't implement something new, nothing would change...
I was ambitious but quite frankly I knew it would be a while until I was making enough from whatever job I was working at the time.
And plus I didn't want to have just one sole source of income.
So when I took the leap and started learning how exactly to sell my services, something amazing happened
The process was actually fun. I always heard "You should learn a high income skill like sales, and I was finally doing it"
It was super interesting learning how to sell
I took it one step at a time and before I knew it, I was ready to launch my photography packages
So what actually is the process of creating and selling photography services?
You can break it down into 6 steps:
- Figure out whats the biggest pain your clients are feeling
- Create offers or systems which helps someone overcome that pain
- Beta test the system
- Create a batch of packages offering different perks
- Setup your course platform
- Learn sales and market your course
And if that still seems complicated, just know that you're probably smarter than me, especially me from 1 year ago.
And I managed.
AND you know me, I don't complicate things. We keep things 💯 and practical here.
"I'm not good enough to sell my SERVICES
By now you're probably wondering what kind of pictures you would even take, and if you're good enough or qualified
I remember when I wondered that.
"Why would people come to me instead of some professional who was far more qualified?"
Wondering that and doubted myself for weeks and weeks.
Convincing myself that I wasn't good enough to take pictures, and certainly not good enough to sell my photography services
Until one day I realized just how many people were following what I was doing, and they were loving it.
So I believed I wasn't qualified to photograph, but my photography was effective.
And think about it, you've like my photos and watch my videos because I'm relatable
Would you rather hire a 50 year old wrinkly guy who has a double PHD in photography, and takes the same cookie cutter photos and is extremely out of touch with the world?
Or the guy who knows what works these days, and has been through countless trial and error to get there?
There's only one you. You see the world through a unique lens, and that's what potential clients are paying for.
Your photos will capture moments not just with technical skill, but with your own creative flair.
Embrace your individuality and let it shine through your work
So you are good enough to sell your services, as long as you keep being you :)
"I'll never be as good as x"
Scrolling through social media, it's easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to established photographers and feel defeated.
The voice whispers, "I'll never be as good as [insert famous photographer's name here]."
But here's the truth:that comparison is a thief, stealing your joy and hindering your growth.
Don't be discouraged! I used to feel the exact same way.
You only see the final, polished product, not the years of dedicated practice, countless failed attempts, and relentless learning that went into creating it.
Focus on yourself – the journey beneath the surface that will eventually lead you to mastery.
If you really think about it, the world doesn't need another photographer replicating someone else's style.
The world needs YOU 🫵🏿 and your vision. That's what will attract clients who resonate.
Everyone learns and grows at their own speed.
Comparing yourself to others creates unnecessary pressure.
Focus on steady improvement, celebrate your milestones, and enjoy the process of honing your craft.
So don't worry about being as good as the next person, because soon people will want to start taking pictures, just like you.

Sonel J.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"In my experience as a freelance photographer, I didn't initially grasp the importance of understanding a camera. At first, I simply believed the camera did all the work, creating the art and capturing the shot. However, after collaborating with Matthew, I've come to appreciate how mastering techniques and methods allows my creative influence to truly impact the photo. Matthew has provided valuable insights into aesthetic techniques such as angles, lighting, and post-production work, as well as understanding emotional intelligence. Thanks to him, I've grown significantly as both a photographer and an artist."
Darius O. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"From the first time that I did a photoshoot with Matt, the main thing I took away from how I should set- up my shoots is the energy I bring. To get things done as a photographer you need to do two jobs, take good photos and keep the vibe up. You can make most of what you need with what you have around you and if you truly believe it, that and positive energy will take you way farther than any curated or specific idea. Matt helped me realize it’s about the spirit of the photographer that stands out more than the actual photo ever could."
Segi O. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I have done a shoot with Matt and have learned a lot from him on how to organize shoots and come up with shot ideas on the fly. I even ended up buy a camera after the shoot. If you’re looking for a skilled photographer to learn from, Matt is your guy.”

Now obviously I'm not going to charge you $6,122
But if I did charge you $6,122 and all it did was get a successful photography business, would it be worth it?
If all it did was help you to be the kind of photographer that ACTUALLY wanted to be, and you transform your business and personal life,
would it be worth it?
If all it did was actually let you compete against the other guy for the client that you want, would it be worth it?
I had two choices with the price of this course. I could go as cheap as possible and try to sell as many as possible by lowering the value...
So I decided to go with the second option, which obviously requires a slightly higher investment on your side.
But in exchange for that, I can dedicate more time, energy and resources to help guarantee your success.
So if you had an successful photography business that got you A LOT of money, clients replying back to your Instagram DMs and made you feel so confident and respected, what would it be worth to you?
How much would you pay to be THAT GUY, the one who's actually successful and living his best life, doing what he loves?
You can probably see why people pay thousands for a transformation like this. It's not a cost, it's an investment.
Because you're a part of my team, I'm going to give you a very special offer...
